The funniest show on TV is back

13 Feb 2020

The Cotswolds is all creamy stone cottages, exquisite gastropubs and picture perfect villages, right? Erm…

Public service announcement: This Country returns for series 3 this coming Monday, 17 February, dropping on iPlayer at 7pm. Rejoice! For those not familiar with the BAFTA-winning BBC mockumentary (do you live in a cave?), it follows the lives of layabout cousins Kerry and Kurtan who hang around their Cotswolds village doing, well, nothing much, beyond tormenting the kindly parish vicar and entering scarecrow competitions.

It’s the brainchild of Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper, real-life siblings and Cotswolds natives who write the show and play the feckless cousins. There’s not much by way of Cotswolds countryside clichés to be found here – no swanky gastropubs, no Barbour jackets’n’red trousers combos, no million pound cottages. Just two bickering youngsters in appalling clothes, bored out of their minds by their bucolic surroundings, working out what the heck to do with their lives. If you grew up in a village, you will relate. And it seems it’s appeal is broader than you might think – Paul Feig, the Hollywood director of films such as Bridesmaids, is making a US version.

It’s very, very funny and surprisingly moving at times. The third series will be the last – booo – and will see the duo pay tribute to their friend Michael Sleggs, who played Kerry and Kurtan’s sometime pal Slugs and who sadly died from heart failure at just 33, before this series was filmed.

Here’s a way-too-short trailer which suggests series 3 is business as usual – ie, Kerry talking absolute nonsense.

And if you’ve not yet had the pleasure of watching series 1 and 2, they’re available here – quick, catch up.
