Autumn hair rescue!

After a long, hot summer exposing my locks to the sun, up top was in need of some serious TLC. Enter Candy Hair in Nailsworth…

To eliminate the über-brassy blonde tones my barnet was sporting after extreme sunbathing during the heatwave. This was the biggie for me as I’m growing my hair, but on the cut front, things definitely needed tidying up and my old graduated bob straightened out at the back.

Conjure up Madonna circa 1983, team her up with Jean-Michel Basquiat (they actually dated around then) in Andy Warhol’s The Factory (where they used to hang out) and you’ll get an idea of the vibe Candy Hair is channelling. You’ve got pots on the wall dripping rainbow shades of paint, a comb art installation in one of the windows, candy floss in the other, bright pops of colour on the walls, on the furniture, in people’s hair! Seriously, one funky young stylist had half-black, half-green hair, which looked fab. Daphne Guinness eat your heart out!

Having rooted around my, er, roots during my pre-consultation, owner Amy informed me I had some red undertones, which I liked the sound of, so instead of a balayage as she’d been initially thinking, she suggested highlights to bring out the subtle red in my blonde. (Not green or pink for me – alas, that ship has well and truly sailed for my middle-aged mane.)

I was in the capable hands of Jess on the big day who, after the foil bit during which time I read magazines on an iPad that literally had the whole cannon loaded up on it, it was over to the wash station for a couple of treatments to make my hair red-carpet worthy.

First up was Olaplex, which builds up your hair’s bonds making it stronger and able to hold colour for longer. Jess described it as “insurance for your hair”. I lay down on what can only be described as a leather day bed while it did its magic for ten minutes.

Usually the hair wash station fills me with dread as I crick my neck causing me to get a frog in my throat which makes small talk near-on impossible, but being essentially horizontal was bliss (and mounted on the ceiling is a great artwork the Hirst prodigies rigged up, a cross between a mandala and a Peter Blake, which was very diverting). So after the Olaplex, I was well up for the next ten-minute gloss treatment which zhooshes up the colour by depositing conditioning tones and making for that high-shine finish I always envy Jennifer Aniston for.

After trimming, Jess got to work with hairdryer and tongs (after spraying and scrunching through product by Davines – an Italian brand I’d never met before but am now in love with, from its gift-wrapped packaging and vegan, eco-friendly credentials to its high-fiving results).

I didn’t quite recognise myself when she’d finished, I looked so damned glossy with my A-list colour and nonchalant, tousled curls. Self-love is easy when you’ve passed through Candy Hair, that’s all I can say!

About average (and a bargain compared to London prices), a cut and finish is £47, a full-head of highlights £81, the Olaplex treatment is £20 and the gloss £25. So it’s a bit of an investment, but hey, it’s your hair and you wear it everyday. A few weeks in and I still feel as glossy as I did when I walked out of the salon, my hair feels in great condition and I’m absolutely loving the colour.
