We're all for shopping at local indies at Muddy and we know you are too - step away from Amazon and read on for how together we can turn this impulse into a bonafide movement. Get involved!
If you’re a regular Muddy reader (er, if not why not?!) you’ll already know that we love brilliant, unique, exciting independent businesses. In fact they’re our lifeblood – we squirrel out the gems, shout about them on the site because we know you’ll love them too, an in doing so also help the businesses to grow.
Unfortunately, over the last year I’ve seen first-hand how hard it has been for so many of these plucky companies across Glos. Business rates are rising, high street footfall is falling, companies are folding and shoppers have less money in their pockets. Plus we’re all so busy that unless we pause, think and reboot, a last minute dash to the computer to hit Amazon rather than a mooch around our local shops is almost inevitable, come 23 Dec.
I’ve been thinking (yes, it does happen occasionally!) about what we can do to help – so I’ve come up with a #inlovewithlocal initiative to buy half of your Christmas goodies on your local high street. *Massive caveat klaxon*: I’m not suggesting that you ditch the supermarket, abandon the internet (er, um, you won’t be able to find us for starters!) or refuse to wash your hair for months because it’s bad for the planet – I’d rather eat my hair shirt than get preachy or right-on. But I’m thinking that maybe, just maybe, committing to half of your shopping locally this Christmas is possible and not onerous! Start in your nearest village or town, and think laterally for everything gift and decorations to your festive food and drink.
And ‘half’ will help more than you know – it’ll help the indie shop-owners, the environment, the local economy, and the vibrancy of our communities.
To kick it off, let’s give these plucky local businesses some exposure right now, shall we? Post images of your favourite local indies or maybe what you’ve bought in store on Instagram @muddy_glos or Facebook @muddyglos (or both!) and tag #inlovewithlocal and we can create a whirlwind of publicity for them.
Ready, steady, shop local!
