The best places to live 2020

The Sunday Times has revealed its top spots to live in 2020 - but did your hometown make the cut?

It looks like we’ll all be spending plenty of time at home at the moment, so what better time to appreciate where you’re living (or, alternatively, start dreamily house-hunting on Rightmove)? The Sunday Times has just released its annual round-up of the best spots in the country to lay your hat – its Best Places to Live Guide 2020, takes into account house prices, air quality, good schools and access to green spaces, as well as community spirit – we can all use a spade load of that right now!

Altrincham in Greater Manchester took national top spot (pah!), but two towns in glorious Glos made the grade – with Cheltenham crowned Best South West overall winner and Stroud being highly commended – bravo!

Cheltenham won top spot for a winning combo of fabulous festivals, classy bar and foodie culture and Regency setting. The Lucky Onion Group with hang ours such as No.131 and Gin & Juice get a shout out and restaurants such as L’Artisan, Prithvi and Lumiere get most worthily mentioned.

Shops and culture are also massive plus points, from the new John Lewis in the centre of town, Montpellier with its gorgeous boutiques, and cultural hubs such as The Wilson Art Gallery and Everyman Theatre.

It also clinched the top spot for its schools -described as a ‘shining attraction’ – as well as the renowned and highly sought after Pate’s Grammar school it’s also home to world-famous institutions such as Cheltenham Ladies College and Balcarras – a secondary school constantly in the top 5 schools in the country.

Down in South Glos Stroud, with its spirited Cotswold town vibe, gets a huge thumbs up. As well as featuring two of the best grammar schools in the county (Marling and Stroud High School for Girls), it is lauded for its quirky character (known amongst locals at The People’s Republic of Stroud wayy before XR was a glimmer in Greta Thunberg’s eye), its incredible weekly Farmer’s Market that rivals Spitalfields, and scores of great organic and vegan foodie outlets.

If you’re not in one of these two towns for the foreseeable (let’s not even guess what month we’ll be allowed our of own homes), take a look at who else made the cut in our area.
