WHAT? WHERE?

King’s Hawford is a co-ed day school for ages 2 to 11 with 270 pupils, located on the outskirts of Worcester. It has a rural idyll feel, sitting in 23 lush acres with a strong outdoorsy offering and an excellent academic record.

Adding to its strength, the school is part of the King’s Foundation, a stable of three schools including nearby King’s Worcester which, combined, cater for ages 2 – 18. King’s Hawford opened in 1955 and class sizes are small, not exceeding 15 per class, allowing children to get laser-guided attention.

If you want a school that parents queue up to get into, take a good look at this place. There had been years in the past where numbers had been low, but that’s now fully in reverse gear. When we visited there were 25 children on the waiting list for Kindergarten. In short, it feels like a school on the up in terms of popularity, so you might want to apply early.

King’s Hawford loves muddy knees – with three Forest Schools – and wherever you look you’ll find children up trees, paddling on the canal, sketching on the ‘mound’ which has a cool new play fortress, or bush-crafting in the grounds.

During my visit pupils were happily climbing a cluster of small trees on their break and tending to the 24 roaming chickens. Alongside this, academics are taken seriously too and children do well, every Friday afternoon you’ll find Years 3 to 6 learning fascinating new stuff, from outward bound skills and cookery to learning a new language.

King’s Hawford is a natural feeder school into King’s Senior in the nearby centre of Worcester, with 95% of pupils continuing to ‘Big King’s’. And all three schools share facilities and expertise – which is extra bang for your buck.

Priding itself on an emphasis on outdoor and experiential learning, King’s Hawford is a campus style school, from Year 1 kids are taught early to be independent, having to move themselves around the school from one class to another.

FACILITIES

Sport

King’s Hawford is very sporty, achieving success at both regional and national levels. No one’s left languishing on the subs bench either. Instead, everyone is encouraged to take part and represent the school, with A and B teams playing on every fixture.

The Barn is a modern, cavernous space that multi-tasks as an indoor sports hall, general performance space and assembly hall. In quirky King’s Hawford fashion it was opened by a horse. Grand National Winner Pineau de Re, stabled nearby, rode in to do the honours.

Children have access to two large sports fields, one with an athletics track, and there is an indoor swimming pool which is heated throughout the year and there is an Astroturf they can access at nearby Big King’s. Swimming classes start young, aged two, and all year groups enjoy regular lessons which isn’t always common.

A lovely feature of the school is its privileged position on the Droitwich Canal, with a mooring just off the school field – could it get more Swallows and Amazons? Children can take out colourful Katakanus which sit in a shed nearby (a whole class fits in three boats) during supervised outings.

The clubs and activities (40+) rotate each term (the usual assortment) but nearly all of them are fee-inclusive which parents will love.

MUSIC & DRAMA

The Barn is a super space and hosts ten shows and concerts every year, from informal music jams to fashion shows and full-school performances. Every child takes part in a major production every year here.

Dance classes take place in the purpose-built Cobb room, a space that features full-length mirrors and special flooring, so if you have a mini ballerina or Diversity fan on your hands they will love it. When I visited, auditions for Grease were in full swing, with a group of ‘Sandies’ belting out tunes from the show, all keen to get a part.

King’s Hawford has scooped an Artsmark Gold Award from the Arts Council of England – only a handful of schools have achieved this around the UK. The director of music is a trumpeter so they have a full set of trumpets, amongst a huge array of other instruments. A high percentage of 85% of children learn at least one musical instrument here, which is pretty impressive.

During my visit I saw a harp lesson in full flow, with a Year 6 proudly showing me her plucking skills on a small, portable mini-harp, which looked lots of fun, and easy to learn on.

The school has an orchestra and there is also a string group, a wind band, a guitar group, a jazz band, as well as a junior and senior choir. Indeed, music is taught as a specialist subject from Reception. In recent years children have brought home the silverware from festivals such as Worcester Competitive Arts Festival (WCAF) and the Cheltenham Festival of Performing Arts (CFPA).

A computing lesson stood out for me, with children controlling cool, spherical robots from class iPads using coding techniques.

Science is well catered for too, there is a large lab which all year groups use. During my visit a teacher showed me giant wasps’ nest she’d brought in from home, which would was used as a topic for a lesson.

Love languages? The language department was bright, engaging and colourful, even children as young as three here get an introduction to German. I saw a great collage from the European Day of Languages which is marked every year with pupils dressing up, along with a European Bake Off competition, with highly creative entries Prue Leith would be proud of.

WHAT ELSE?

The King’s Hawford Library is a double decker bus. Yep, you heard me right. This is a Muddy first, and shows how adept this school is at thinking outside of the box (no space inside? Buy a bus)! Costing £40k, this is a genius solution to a lack of classroom space.

Inside it’s brimming with 2000+ books, fully climate-controlled and has comfy nooks for quiet reading, there’s even an old-fashioned ticket machine.

Unsurprisingly, the kids love reading here, the unusual setting works wonders for nurturing bookworms and is especially great if you have a reluctant reader.

And watch this space in 2026 – the Prep has further exciting ‘transport-based’ plans! Although details were tightly under wraps when I visited, I can reveal it will be another iconic type of vehicle for the children to use on site.

Part imaginative learning space, part ‘beat this’ feature for any rival schools, it spotlights how learning here is imbued with a large dollop of imagination.

LITTLIES

Nursery and Kindergarten were a hub of colour, activity, noise and industry – it felt like a very happy and bubbly place.

Intake starts at two years old and as pupils turn four they enter the ‘Rainbow Room’ to help them bridge the gap between Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2.

As for the older kids, the provision is set in the older, original Georgian building, with each year room snaking off individual floors. So nothing super-modern perhaps, but it’s got bags of character. When I visited fully immersive lessons were taking place to keep the kids engaged – from a lively spelling test in English to a full HIIT workout in PE.

Although Year 4 were away when I visited the classroom they learn in is lovely – spacious and featuring large bi-fold doors which open right out for a great hybrid indoor/outdoor learning experience.

FOREST SCHOOL

Outdoor learning is at the heart of everything at King’s Hawford and it has been awarded Gold by The Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, held by only a small number of schools nationally.

You’ll find a dedicated outdoor classroom for themed activities and there are lots of trips and residentials, where kids get to camp out, set up own tents and do their own cooking.

There are three Forest School areas, the main one being a large, self-contained glade with towering trees and filled with various fantastic ‘activity’ stations. Being located just off the main road (one of the convenient features of the school) you can hear cars in the distance, but the forest school is so immersive you won’t notice.

All of the children were having a glorious time from digging for nature ‘treasures’ to making hedgehogs out of twigs, teddy bear picnics and a very fun swing. And it’s not just the littles who get all the fun, pupils up to year 6 get taught bushcraft here too. Beehives with a colony of resident bees have also been put in now – so watch this space for King’s Hawford honey.

ACADEMICS

Pupils here come out far above the national average, with half of a recent Year 6 cohort winning scholarships to senior schools, mostly to King’s Senior but also specialist music schools or sporty schools or places like Millfield. There is no entrance exam to King’s senior now either, instead all pupils are offered a place at the end of Year 5, but with ongoing assessment.

THE HEAD

Since taking up the reins in November 2022, Tom Butt has brought a purposeful direction to the school. When he arrived he was the third head in as many years, but he’s steadied the ship into stable times.

With a mix of genuine warmth and gravitas when you meet him he comes across as a strong and caring leader at the helm.

He has a big love of the outdoors and curiosity for the world (shaped by two teacher parents) and brings global experience to the table, having taught in Chile and Switzerland, been Director of Sport at Dover College and Deputy Head Pastoral at Bredon School.

His subject passion is PE, and is a keen advocate of learning outside of the classroom, wherever possible. His teacher wife Charlotte leads the school’s Girls’ Games programme, and their daughter Millie and son Oliver attend King’s Worcester.

He chats enthusiastically about pupil-crafted items on his desk (part of an upcoming assembly), and is surrounded by family photos, paintings by his adventurer grandfather, and rugby hero Johnny Wilkinson on the walls. His springer spaniel, Saffy, was also happily curled up in the corner.

Butt is wary of change for change’s sake, saying how he loves the school’s ‘mad idiosyncrasies’ and is a big believer in a school not being ‘like a library’, but instead full of life and energy. Certainly during my visit the classrooms and play areas were clearly happy places full of children soaking up what they were doing.

One of his key aims has been to strengthen ties across the King’s Worcester Foundation, aligning King’s Hawford with St Alban’s and the senior school. He’s particularly proud of scrapping the senior school entrance exam, calling it an ‘unnecessary pressure’. Its removal means a far smoother transition for pupils now if they want to move up to King’s.

QUIRKS

Meet the King’s Hawford menagerie! This place has its own mini-zoo. The school counts amongst its residents two roaming peacocks, two seven-year-old tortoises and a gaggle of 24 chickens that free range around the grounds.

When I visited there was a huge aviary with budgies too, but these were recently rehomed and a new hen house had been built by the groundsman. All of the children get the chance to look after the animals in Year 6, taking it in turns to let them out and feed them.

Hawford Activity Badges; the school has an innovative programme open to all of pupils from Reception to Year 6 where they complete tasks in order to achieve merit badges, these seem really popular with the kids.

PASTORAL CARE

Parents are kept closely informed about their children’s wellbeing and are able to make daily contact with the class teacher. The Form Tutor is at the heart of the care system here and is always available to pupils and parents alike. Older children help younger pupils in the playground and also undertake additional responsibilities around the school, plus, a school nurse is available throughout each school day.

I noted a ‘Worry Box’ in one of the covered playtime spaces here, there are four all over the school, which children can post in if they have any worries. There is also a four-house system (Bredon, Kinver, Clent, Malvern) which has a mentoring system for the younger children.

Kids seem to have a real voice here too. The former pupil-led School Council has been replaced with a Pupil Parliament, which is far grander. It features three committees – eco, wellbeing and co-curricular – with over 50 children involved every year, all elected by their peers.

WRAPAROUND CARE

There is good full-time provision here so it’s a great choice for busy working parents. Children can be dropped off from 7.45am.

There is supervised care at after-school clubs every day until 6.00pm. There is also the addition of Holiday Club throughout the school holidays which offers year-round nursery care.

WORD ON THE GROUND

Parents seem to have lots of praise for the school, with one parent describing it as having a ‘village feel but with a world outlook’. Another mum of a pupil loved the country feel it has to it, with a wealth of clubs and activities at no extra cost.

Staff are frequently described as approachable and friendly. And one mum appreciated the way that parents are not kept at ‘arms length’, but instead feel really part of the school and its decisions.

MOBILE PHONE POLICY & TECH

Mobile phones are not permitted in school or in lesson and must be handed in to the school office in the mornings.

Pupils have access to tablets throughout the school day should they need them. The school is not particularly ‘techy,’ in that you won’t see children on iPads all the time, with paper and pen learning still very much championed at the school, something many parents may be fans of.

ISI REPORT

FEES

Fees are pretty good value and come in about averagely in the UK for a Prep School, especially at the lower end. Fees in Reception start at £3,689 per term, progressing to £4,287 in Year 2 and up to £6,538 in Year 6. See the full fees here.

MUDDY VERDICT

Good for: A top school for outdoorsy, sporty, dance or drama-loving types. Little go-getters will excel here, but it’s also great for quieter kinds who need nudging out of their shell. If you’re eyeing up an easy glide into senior school, you’re in luck – since the entrance exam was scrapped it’s a shoe-in, with no sweaty-palmed pressure.

Not for: Any child who doesn’t like dirty knees, a fiercely indoorsy type might struggle, but the sense of community and camaraderie might change that. Anyone needing boarding, this one is strictly for the day-schoolers.
