<p>The horticultural highlight of the year is fast approaching, the florally fabulous <a href="https://rhsmalvern.co.uk">RHS Malvern Spring Festival</a> returns to Three Counties Showground from 8 May to 11 May, and it&#8217;s going to be an unmissable four days of fun.</p>



<p>Bursting with celeb speakers, demos, show gardens, shopping, tipples and treats, who better to chat all things garden-core with than special guest at this year&#8217;s show, petal perfectionist Jonathan Moseley. </p>



<p>An internationally celebrated floral designer, author and broadcaster for over 35 years, you&#8217;ll probably know him from regular pop-ups on ITV&#8217;s<em> Love Your Weekend</em> with Alan Titchmarsh CBE, and a floral expert on<em> </em>the BBC&#8217;s<em> Big Allotment Challenge.</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-hello-tell-us-where-your-passion-for-petals-comes-from">Hello! Tell us where your passion for petals comes from? </h2>



<p>I have been a professional florist for over 35 years now, my parents were keen gardeners but it was my grandfather who really encouraged me and I had my own patch of garden with him. For my 11th Birthday I was given my own greenhouse which I ran like a mini market garden saving enough money to buy my first car. </p>



<p>My earliest memories are going on walks to see the first wild flowers like violets, bluebells and primroses, I found I loved picking flowers arranging them and finding out about how and where they grow.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-s-the-most-boujee-flower-display-you-ve-ever-whipped-up">What’s the most boujee flower display you’ve ever whipped up?</h2>



<p>There have been many, but flowering up a double decker bus later this year for a show in Lincolnshire may prove to be my biggest and best challenge! The logistics of suspending flowers and keeping them alive via a water source is always a nightmare, particularly in summer time when they are subject to the often sunny weather conditions.</p>

<p>I loved designing the <em>Florabundance</em> flower festival at the beautiful Chatsworth House, as sole designer it was a huge challenge involving tens of thousands of flowers. </p>



<p>I had an enormous team of people helping me and each year had a different theme plus the house remained open to the hundreds of visitors whilst we were doing the installation. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-and-confess-your-biggest-floral-flop">And confess your biggest floral flop?</h2>



<p>A disaster? Now that&#8217;s tough because most things usually get solved in the end as you have to just adapt and improvise. Once, when I was providing British sunflowers for the gala night of the musical <em>Calendar Girls</em>, featuring my friend Fern Briton, the hundreds of sunflowers arrived in tight bud, as opposed to open! So you could say that was a bit of a disaster!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-would-your-dream-collab-look-like">What would your dream collab look like?</h2>



<p>I would very much love to recreate a huge enormous Dutch/Flemish style flower arrangement in a ginormous urn in the middle of Dam Square in Amsterdam. I love the Dutch flower paintings and that baroque style. </p>



<p>It would have been a joy to collaborate on a design with the late Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Scottish architect, designer and painter, as his linear and angular designs challenged convention and still paid homage to natural forms.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-will-you-be-up-to-at-this-year-s-rhs-malvern-spring-festival">What will you be up to at this year’s RHS Malvern Spring Festival?</h2>

<p>I am very excited about this year, I&#8217;ll be showcasing inspirational ideas to encourage visitors to get creative with seasonal plant materials. You&#8217;ll find me in the <em>Potting Shed Theatre</em> and at the. new <em>Give It A Grow Theatre &amp; Festival</em>.</p>



<p>I&#8217;m a big fan of seasonal British flowers and will be explaining how you can work in a sustainable and environmentally conscious way with them. Also, this year I will be dressing the iconic RHS letters (which I have done many times at all the other RHS shows but never at Malvern!).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-event-is-on-your-wish-list-at-the-festival">What event is on your wish list at the Festival?</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s so much on it&#8217;s almost impossible to choose! But definitely the Floral Marquee, because it&#8217;s huge and it&#8217;s like lifting the lid on the biggest, tastiest box of chocolates ever, but it&#8217;s full of plants &#8211; my obsession.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-if-you-had-to-create-a-floral-arrangement-that-represents-your-personality-what-would-it-look-like">If you had to create a floral arrangement that represents your personality, what would it look like?</h2>



<p>It would have to be wild and natural, with lots of twigs and branches and early spring blossom from apple and cherry trees. I like this type of thing because there is beauty in simplicity and I love how a bare branch can burst into colour as the blossom explodes into a flower. </p>



<p>For my own personal style of flowers I like things that are less commercially flowery and more nature inspired as I guess that is the real me &#8211; simple and natural!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-spill-the-tea-what-are-the-floral-trends-for-2025">Spill the tea, what are the floral trends for 2025? </h2>

<p>Weddings will continue to see the arranged un-arranged look for bouquets, often wild and messy, or more a-symmetrical. There is a trend for simple single flower bouquets in straight colours featuring just one variety of flowers. Foliage remains enormous and the use of houseplants incorporated as part of floral displays to increase the longevity of the design.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-flower-is-totally-underated-and-deserves-more-love">What flower is totally underated and deserves more love?</h2>



<p>Perennials are such an inexpensive way to grow flowers that will come back reliably year after year. Celebrate easy to grow things like lupins, foxgloves, astrantia, veronica and phlox. </p>



<p>I love sangusorbias that range in height from dwarf varieties at 20cm to tall giants at 5ft plus. Their wispy character gives a lovely floaty breezy feel to any style of flower display.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tell-us-your-favourite-bloom-of-all-time">Tell us your favourite bloom of all time?</h2>

<p>My absolute favourite is, believe it or not, the humble snowdrop, it&#8217;s the first flower to bring colour after the depth of winter, which is pretty special. They are stoic and resilient braving the inclement weather regardless,</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-which-podcasts-or-books-do-you-have-on-the-go-at-the-moment">Which podcasts or books do you have on the go at the moment?  </h2>



<p>I am more of a book person, I love any biographies as people&#8217;s lives fascinate me. I&#8217;m currently reading books on Shirley Bassey, Byron and Bess of Hardwick!</p>

<p>Stick with seasonal blooms for the best value. Many mums have personal favourites like roses, peonies or freesias. Seasonal flowers are so much fresher and captivate that springtime feel. </p>



<p>Look out for hyacinths, ranunculus, tulips and if you are buying flowers do remember that your local high street florist is the expert on flower care and will offer a bespoke service that is personal and professional.</p>
