It’s decadent, delicious, better value than lunch and involves a LOT of cake. What’s not to like about afternoon tea? Here are some of the best places in our two fabulous counties to celebrate National Afternoon Tea Week (9-15 Aug). But let’s be honest, we’re here for it any week of the year. Shall I pour?
Cake & Charcuterie Afternoon Tea, Burleigh Court Hotel, Stroud
We love this twist on a delicious afternoon tea. Enjoy a sumptuous feast in the beautiful setting of Burleigh Court hotel – Muddy Glos Worc’s Boutique Hotel of 2021! Tucked away in a peaceful haven with stunning views over the rolling Golden Valley, afternoon tea is served up Weds to Sat from 3pm to 5pm, but make sure to book in advance. What’s on the menu crafted by Burleigh’s brilliant head chef? A meaty feast of sausage rolls, scotch eggs, and charcuterie followed by freshly baked scones (fruit and plain) with clotted cream, homemade jam and a selection of cakes. Plus there’s a fabulous vegetarian option for any non-meat eaters out there.
Queen’s Tiffin Afternoon Tea, Queens Hotel, Cheltenham
Take a seat in the beautiful Duke’s Tea Room, or outside in the stylish new Summer Garden and tuck into the Queen’s Afternoon Tea combining homemade savoury and sweet treats served with the finest infusions (or glass of champers). Served daily from 12.30 to 4.30pm we love the longer hours here.
Mirabeau Tipsy Tea, The Fish, Broadway
Settle in for an afternoon of total luxury at the Fish Hotel near Broadway. Set on a 400 acre Farncombe Estate The Mirabeau Tipsy Tea is a boozy take on the traditional afternoon tea, perfectly paired with a choice of divine tipples, co-created by The Fish’s Bar Manager, Harvey. Sip on one of four amazing sounding tea-tipples, fromWhite Tea Fizz (Mirabeau La Folie Spakling Rose with a sparkling white tea citric syrup) to Beau Selecta (Mirabeau Dry Gin with jasmine dawn shrub, cucumber and lemon). All served in the lounge at the main lodge, and out on the expansive terrace at The Fish. Priced at £32.50 per person and served daily from 2pm-4.30pm.
Posh Afternoon Tea, Tewkesbury Park Hotel , Tewkesbury
An afternoon gorging at the splendidly stylish Tewkesbury Park Hotel? Take us there now. Set in rolling hills and overlooking a lovely golf course if you fancy a few pars afterwards, this lovely luxury hotel has an indulgent afternoon filled with sweet and savoury treats, lashings of locally made jam and Cotteswold Dairy clotted cream; plus, if you’re celebrating something special, guests can add on a glass of Taittinger Champagne too.
Pink Champagne Afternoon Tea, Luxe Cafe, Cirencester
The pink-themed Luxe Cafe in the heart of pretty Cirencester is one of our favourite hang outs. If you want the perfect IG wall to take your afternoon tea selfie with this is the place. A finalist in the Muddy Glos Awards 2021 for Best Cafe now less, book a Cream Tea with delicious sandwiches and cakes from just £9 and add on a glass of Pink Champagne for £7.
The Lygon Arms, Broadway
The luxe Lygon Arms is the perfect setting for a cosy afternoon tea. Aside from the fluffy, freshly baked scones, dainty finger sandwiches and irresistible sweet cakes, you can go all out with a paired glass of Veuve Clicquot Champagne too. And if you’ve got kids in tow ask for their themed kids afternoon tea too during the summer holidays for £12.50 per child. Adult teas start at £25 and go up to £45 for a Veuve Clicquot Riche Tea.
This boutique hotel in the heat of Painswick has the most gorgeous Italianate terrace to sit out on and enjoy your afternoon tea. Head Chef, Jamie McCallum, previously worked under Gary Rhodes at Rhodes 24 and as Anthony Demetre’s Head Chef at Wild Honey in Mayfair, so he knows his choux. We love the Naughty and Nice menu here, go for the Full George (£18), or all out for a Prosecco or Cocktail Afternoon Tea (£27).

Summer Garden Afternoon Tea, The Ivy, Cheltenham
Lap up the swanky Art Deco setting of The Ivy in Cheltenham as you treat yourself to their incredible afternoon tea. There are delights such as truffled chicken brioche roll and smoked salmon on rye bread on offer, while the sweet treats include raspberry cheesecake, and chocolate and salted caramel mousse.
