No passport required: Go globe-trotting in Stroud

How much have you missed travel? Scratch that wanderlust itch at Five Valleys, the newest and coolest 'shop and scoff' destination that takes you around the world without even having to step foot outside the shires. Buckle up and come with us ...

Imagine the artisan stalls of Borough Market in London mixed with the vibe of New York’s Meatpacker District, and you’ve pretty much summed up Five Valleys in Stroud.

Having undergone a massive multi-million pound rebirth over the past two years, this brilliant shopping centre is as good as getting on a plane and hitting your favourite country (with way better in-flight food and far less faff!).

Hosting a myriad of great indie businesses you’ll find global street food sellers, boutiques, delis, wine-sellers, gift shops, cafes, bakeries, florists and even a bijou department store.

Want to be whisked off on a no-passport-needed adventure? Here are 8 different countries you can experience right under the Five Valleys roof, without even leaving home turf …

Grab an Espresso and an Italian pastry at Non Solo Pasta

The espresso and pasta bar at this authentic Italian street food cafe is the definition of la dolce vita. Matteo and Clara are the chef-owners and serve up the best Lavazza coffee you’ll get this side of Rome (it’s where they hail from). All of the Pasticcini cakes are handmade and totally delicious. Make a return visit at lunch or dinner time to try out their incredible pasta too. Their legendary Penne Bolognese is on repeat order at the Muddy household on takeaway nights.

Look like you’ve jetted in from Cafe Del Mar when really you’ve just been to the rails of boutique Sub Couture.

One of Notting Hill’s best loved shops it now has a store at Five Valleys with a fabulous range of on trend brands including Oneseason, Dream, Suzy D, Onjenu and Victoria Plimsoll. This quirky independent store can be found on King Street and is owned by husband and wife team Derek and Louise Aiken. Louise herself is a former Ibiza DJ (and backing DJ for Betty Boo no less!) so expect the coolest vibe and shop soundtrack of course.

Could these be the best Thai noodles outside of the Far East? Judge for yourself at Thai 2 Go.

Ian Calvert and Sudjai Phaophong from Painswick serve up freshly made, authentic Thai street food to, changing their menu and introducing new dishes on a weekly basis. It’s the real deal here too – their passion for Thai food began in North Eastern Thailand selling BBQ Thai snacks on a market stall before returning to the UK and opening one of the first Thai restaurants in Painswick in 1997 for ten years – find them now at Five Valleys, pull up a chair at the noodle bar, we highly recommend the Green and Red Curries and Pad Thai.

Pop into family-run Sandersons Boutique Department Store for a seductive shot of la vie en rose (that’s the good life to me and you).

As well as fabulous fashion, accessories and interiors it has the most gorgeous beauty and perfume counter here. You’ll find the likes of Montale Paris, Histoires de Parfum, Robert Piguet, Parfums de Marly, and Sandersons are also the only UK stockists of French fragrance Marc Antoine Barrois too (above). Then, when you’re done, head over to stock up your makeup bag at Clarins here too.

If you love a bit of spice go to La Cantina, family-run Tex-Mex street food stall La Cantina is the place.

It does an amazing line in Burritos, Nachos, Quesadillas and more. Pimp your own takeaway just as you like it, they are super helpful here, and the food is really delicious, plus they do great tasty vegan options too.

Got a sweet tooth? Then you will fall totally in love with the cocoa delights at Cafe Xocolatl (pronounced sho-koh-lah-tuhl). This small husband and wife-run choccy company from Quedgeley in Gloucester uses the finest Belgian couverture chocolate, free from any artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Muddy tip: order one of their homemade hot chocolates too, they are heaven in a cup.

South America fans will be in their element here. Go to Armadeli for incredible cheese, meats, nibbles, wines and more from the continent, and then swing by Phoenix Wines to stock up for summer.

This indie wine seller knows a lot about vino, pick up a bottle of something special recommended by highly experienced in-the-know Cotswold wine seller Simon Griffiths.

And lastly … escape to anywhere you want at the Vue Cinema here (we told you this place had it all).

Currently wowing the audience at this 6-screen bijou cinema is Washington-based The Heights. PLUS – get 10% off hot food if you see a flick here. Simply show your cinema ticket to any participating market stall to enjoy this exclusive offer. Offer can only be redeemed on the day you purchase your cinema ticket, but you can choose to enjoy pre or post movie treats …

Go to to find out more or to check out shop and vendor opening times. Head down on the last Friday of every month for a brilliant late night market with live music.

Five Valleys is the proud sponsor of the Muddy Stilettos Awards 2021.
