The Scenic Supper Virgin Mary

Let's face it, in the brutal light of New Year's Day that 3rd bottle of Sancerre will not feel like your finest hour. If you're expecting the hangover from hell (or just for fun) try this easy-to-make Virgin Mary, it's the ultimate cure for Xmas x-cess (or at least a good start).

You’ve tried a full English, mainlined three cans of coke and hidden under the duvet all morning with a kettledrum band in your head. The hangover struggle is real on NYD. So what’s to lose? Try this restorative tipple direct from The Scenic Supper.

Make it exactly as you like, straight up as a healthy shot of vitamins, or, if you insist on hair of the dog (you brave, brave woman) turn it into a Red Snapper (just add a gin base) or Bloody Mary (add a vodka base).

This recipe makes a 1.1 litre jug.

Ingredients:

1 litre Tomato juice – go for a supermarket own and spice it yourselves.

100ml Worcestershire sauce

Fresh juice of 2 limes

Fresh juice 1 lemon

2 good pinches black pepper

2 good pinches celery salt

Tea-spoon horseradish

Pinch of paprika

Tabasco to taste but start with 4 good dashes and work from there (you can always add more).

Method:

Everyone has their own ratio, but this is ours! It’s all about the ratio of tomato juice to Worcestershire sauce. The rest is down to taste so here is the secret! We love 10:1. So, 1 litre of tomato juice to 100ml of Worcestershire Sauce. Sounds like a lot of Worcestershire Sauce but trust me, it works.

Mix up all the ingredients and serve. The Virgin Mary can be prepared and chilled ready to be stirred and poured into a celery salted, ice filled glass. Or if you want it immediately, you can add 300ml of your mixture to a ice filled cocktail shaker and shake gently to chill. Single strain into an ice filled hi-ball and garnish with whatever you have.

Garnishes we love? Celery dusted in Celery Salt, a lime wedge, pickled onions, green olives, slice of crispy bacon.
