<a href="https://www.woodchestermansion.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Woodchester Mansion</a> is catnip for Wuthering Heights fans, as it was built in 1857, just after the novel was published, and this unique, unfinished Victorian Grade I Gothic house is a fascinating visit.



Hidden away in a Cotswold valley in Stonehouse, take a tour of the mansion and admire Gothic arches, carved stonework and a whole lot of history. Get a slab of delicious coffee and cake at the new Henry&#8217;s café, then go for a walk on a windswept 30 minute loop, taking in lakes and woodland.

In Worcestershire, wander the ruins of <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/witley-court-and-gardens/history/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Witley Court</a>. If you like your Gothic with a side of grand excess, Witley Court is perfect. Redmodelled in peak Wuthering Heights period of the 185s, it&#8217;s a vast, roofless mansion slowly being reclaimed by nature. It&#8217;s gloriously over-the-top with a slice of tragic drama! Take an audio tour and wander the glorious gardens too.

<a href="https://www.thewoolpackslad.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Woolpack</a> recently scooped the accolade of fifth best pub in the UK (Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs) and it&#8217;s the perfect place for a paired-back Wuthering Heights-vibe pub lunch. We&#8217;re talking low beams, good beer and literary heritage.



This is Laurie Lee territory &#8211; the author of Cider with Rosie &#8211; and he drank here, wrote about the lanes and views, and is buried just across the road in the Slad churchyard. The pub is also the custodian of the Laurie Lee beer bottle collection and a cabinet dedicated to his written works, as part of a tiny book shop!



Before you go in, do the Laurie Lee Loop, walk down through the valley and back up via the woodland paths, a lovely 45 minute to one hour loop just enough to earn that glass of wine.

Stretching for 8 miles along the Worcestershire and Herefordshire border, the Malvern Hills bring totally windswept moors vibes. 



Yomp up to the beacon, the highest point soars to 425 metres, and drink in wide, cinematic views. On a clear day you can see across multiple counties.



Do the full ridge walk or choose shorter circular routes that still delivery views without completely wiping you out. And, crucially, the post-walk payoff is excellent. Great Malvern is just minutes away. We love Faun café, Abbey Road Coffee and <a href="https://www.cottageinthewood.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Cottage in the Wood</a> for coffee, cake or a pint of hearty ale!



In Glos, go to The Painswick Beacon and walk the romantic Cotswold Escarpment. This windswept 920ft hill gives stunning 360-degree views of the Severn Vale, Forest of Dean and Welsh Mountains.



Or, take yourself off for a stroll on <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/gloucestershire-cotswolds/minchinhampton-and-rodborough-commons/explore-minchinhampton-and-rodborough-commons" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Minchinhampton and Rodborough Commons</a>, these National Trust moor-like landscapes are easy to park up and do so a bite-sized walk. Stop off for a pint at <a href="https://www.cotswold-inns-hotels.co.uk/the-bear-of-rodborough?_gl=1*lf7z3v*_up*MQ..*_ga*MjA5Mjg4MTQ4Ni4xNzcwNzQwMDc0*_ga_QP8C599QRJ*czE3NzA3NDAwNzMkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzA3NDAwNzMkajYwJGwwJGgw*_ga_BJQPCDPTXQ*czE3NzA3NDAwNzMkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzA3NDAwNzMkajYwJGwwJGgw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bear of Rodborough</a> or ice cream at Winstones. Go from May to October and wander amongst the Belted Galloway cows which free-range the whole area &#8211; it&#8217;s a bucolic paradise.

Broadway Tower &amp; Park is a fairytale-style folly built in 1798 sitting high on the North Cotswolds. Set within a 200-acre estate of parkland, it&#8217;s an English heritage gem in the most inspiring location. 



Wander the park and buy a ticket to get entry to the Tower Museum with roof platform that looks out over rolling countryside, and the Deer Park. Head to the Morris &amp; Brown café for a great toastie and hot chocolate in the winter, or take a picnic if you&#8217;re leaning in to the elemental vibe!







<h1 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wander-around-a-ruined-abbey">Wander around a ruined abbey</h1>

Just a tiptoe over the Glos border, on the side of the River Wye, is <a href="https://cadw.gov.wales/visit/places-to-visit/tintern-abbey#visitor-information" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tintern Abbey</a>, a Gothic masterpiece that just oozes romance. Admire it from afar, or get close up (adults: £9, kids: £6.30.) Other must-sees here include the&nbsp;Devil’s Pulpit,&nbsp;with sweeping views of Tintern Abbey and the Wye Valley.

Or, go to the ruins at <a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/hailes-abbey/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hailes Abbey</a>, near Winchcombe. Roofless and quietly haunting, Hailes Abbey is like something out of a novel. The arches frame distant hills, sheep graze where monks once lived, and on misty mornings it’s all deliciously melancholy. Perfect for slow wandering and staring into the middle distance.
