<p>Tucked between the Severn Estuary and the southern edge of the Cotswolds, this charming town offers AONB-adjacent countryside cool, without the crowds. It’s steeped in history (hello, <em>Game of Thrones</em>-style castle and Edward Jenner-core), and plentiful housing stock from spacious family homes  to a scattering of pastel cottages.</p>



<p>All this and it&#8217;s surrounded by meadows, nature trails and views that meander for miles. It’s properly peaceful &#8211; think church bells, farmers’ markets and swallows overhead &#8211; but it’s also just 25 mins from Bristol and 20 mins from Stroud, making it a solid pick for those wanting a rural base with good connections.</p>

<p>Berkeley’s food scene might be small, but it punches above its postcode. Go to the castle for light bites, coffee and cake at the fantastic <a href="https://www.berkeley-castle.com/restaurant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kitchen Garden</a> &#8211; set within Berkeley Castle’s lush walled garden this gourmet café is a destination brunch or lunch spot.</p>



<p>On the high street, there&#8217;s a sprinkling of places to perch for a coffee. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/perfectblendberkeley/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Perfect Blend Café</a> is your go-to for flat whites and homemade bakes. Or try the Berkeley Tea Rooms, for a traditional cream tea. Nearby, less than 10 mins away, go to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/2019thehideoutlounge" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Hideout Lounge</a>, an award-winning café with a great menu, and the excellent <a href="https://leafandground.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leaf &amp; Ground</a> with its all-day deli style menu.</p>



<p>In the mood for a pub? Try <a href="http://www.the-sally-at-ham.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Salutation Inn</a> (aka The Sally) in nearby Ham, a family-run pub with a buzzy beer garden, brewery on site and Sunday roasts. You&#8217;re within 20 mins of rustic Cotswold pubs a-plenty (stick a pin in Google maps and go!) and Berkeley&#8217;s proximity to Bristol means if you&#8217;re craving more, it&#8217;s under half an hour away.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shop"><strong>SHOP</strong></h2>



<p>The town centre may not be a place for designer fashion, but you&#8217;re armed with the basics here. There&#8217;s a Co-op for groceries, Berkeley Hardware is brilliantly old-school (in the best way) for bits and bobs, while Gordon’s the Butcher is your spot for proper meat, pies and free range eggs from their own chickens.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.facebook.com/berkeleybooksuk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berkeley Books</a> is a charming second-hand bookshop that doubles as a community hub. Think creaky floors, handwritten signs and book lovers talking poetry over mugs of tea.</p>



<p>Nearby, <a href="https://leafandground.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Leaf &amp; Ground</a> is also a lifestyle store, garden centre and café rolled into one where you can pick up gorgeous homeware, plants and local gifts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing"><strong>HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</strong></h2>



<p>Berkeley’s calm pace of life does half the job, but if you need more, you’ve got options. The Maybrook Medical Centre is your main GP hub, with friendly local services and linked dental care nearby.</p>



<p>Dynamic Fitness and also <a href="https://www.fearlessstrengthfitness.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Fearless Strength &amp; Fitness</a> offer everything from spin to one-to-one PTs. <p>It&#8217;s a popular place to raise a family, so for a small town, Berkeley has a big sense of belonging. From classic village fetes and <a href="https://berkeleyshow.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Berkeley Show</a> (a fantastic, old-school country fair with livestock, crafts and tractor rides) to community cinema nights at the town hall, there’s a regular rhythm to life here &#8211; and everyone’s welcome.</p>



<p>The town also gets behind causes, from charity bake sales to a community clean-up event, there’s a real &#8216;know your neighbour&#8217; energy here that many bigger towns have lost.</p>

<p>Berkeley is home to not one, but two major heritage icons. <a href="https://www.berkeley-castle.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Berkeley Castle</a> is one of the oldest continuously occupied castles in England (built in the 12th century), and its gardens, guided tours, and historic rooms make it a top family or date-day out.</p>

<p>Then there’s the <a href="https://jennermuseum.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dr Jenner’s House</a> &#8211; the pioneering Glos scientist behind the smallpox vaccine &#8211; a low-key gem of a museum that&#8217;s fascinating to explore. Leave time for the gorgeously lush gardens too.</p>



<p>Just outside town you&#8217;re spoilt for choice. <a href="https://www.cattlecountry.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cattle Country Farm Park</a> is an amazing place to spend the day, with two huge indoor play barns, friendly farm animals to meet, acres of outdoor play to explore and the UK&#8217;s tallest scramble net! </p>



<p>You’ve got walks along the Severn Way, Sharpness Canal, and Cotswold Way, plus the award-winning <a href="https://www.wwt.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre</a>, 10 mins away, for flamingos, otters, family trails and wetland wanders.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture"><strong>CULTURE</strong></h2>



<p>Berkeley is quiet &#8211; but secretly quite creative. Expect craft groups, poetry nights and live music in local pubs. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BerkeleyPlayersAmateurDramatics/?locale=en_GB" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Berkeley Players</a> put on plays and pantos through the year, and the town supports local makers with markets and seasonal fairs.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.tomatojack.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Tomato Jack Arts</a> is also a great place to get stuck into creative mosaics, as well as being a hub for community projects and workshops, it also offers studio and gallery hire if you&#8217;re arty and fancy a dabble. </p>



<p>If you want bigger shows, you’re 25 mins from Stroud’s pioneering indie <a href="https://thesubrooms.co.uk/whats-on?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21206387666&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAqbI_fN0naC0VAKvDpurDt3Jjl4Sl&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw9uPCBhATEiwABHN9K29DISrg37EMr6LhReekw8Y6KaCvbuR4NIdeN2B19p_Gmr6BgHTFuRoCIbMQAvD_BwE" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sub Rooms</a> for fringe theatre and live gigs, and 30 mins from Bristol for full-on arts and culture.</p>

Or, a bit further out, try Ousted rated: Good <a href="https://www.chapelhilldaynursery.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Chapel Hill Nursery</a>, set in an acre of pretty grounds. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schools"><strong>SCHOOLS</strong></h2>



<p><a href="https://www.berkeleyprimary.org.uk/">Berkeley Primary School</a> is a well-rated school right in the centre of town, friendly, inclusive, and Ofsted rated “Good” with some &#8220;Outstanding&#8221; features. For secondary, many students move on to <a href="https://www.rednockschool.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rednock School</a> in Dursley or <a href="https://www.klbschool.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Katherine Lady Berkeley’s</a> in Wotton-under-Edge, both of which are rated &#8220;Good&#8221; by Ofsted and are popular with local families plus easily reached by school transport.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret"><strong>BEST KEPT SECRET</strong></h2>



<p>Berkeley has one of the oldest private libraries in England &#8211; the Berkeley family archive, housed in the castle, is usually closed to the public but occasionally opens for special events.</p>



<p>Oh  &#8211; and if you’re into stargazing? Head up to nearby Stinchcombe Hill &#8211; a lovely easy hike &#8211; on a clear night. No streetlights, no noise. Just you, the stars, and a thermos of hot chocolate. Magic.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute"><strong>COMMUTE</strong></h2>



<p>Berkeley gives you the rural dream without being remote. You’re 15 mins from Junction 14 of the M5, making Bristol a smooth 25 min drive and Gloucester is also just 25 mins away. The nearest mainline train stations are Cam &amp; Dursley (15 mins), Yate (20 mins), and Bristol Parkway (30 mins), with fast services to London, Cardiff and Birmingham.</p>
